Massive amounts of raw information or “Big Data” is emanating from interconnected devices—the “Internet of things.” According to this year’s EMC-sponsored IDC Digital Universe study, a major factor behind the expansion of the Digital Universe is the growth of machine-generated data—from 11% in 2005 to more than 40% projected in 2020, when IDC predicts 200 billion devices (e.g. sensors, surveillance cameras, appliances, vehicles, smart devices, toys, etc...) will be connected in the Digital Universe.
EMC Chief Strategist Paul Maritz discussed this topic and others as a panelist at a recent GE-sponsored Minds+Machines event in San Francisco. Along with DJ Patil, Chief Data Scientist, Greylock Partners, Hilary Mason, Chief Scientist, Bitly and Matt Reilly, Managing Director, Accenture Management Consulting, the panel, moderated by Tim O’Reilly, Founder & CEO, O’Reilly Media focused on how people and technology are coming together and forming the next wave of the Internet—the “Industrial Internet”—an open, global network that connects machines, people, and data.
