By now it’s no surprise that most every business must become a digital business – a sentiment reflected in the Digital Transformation Index we released last year. It’s long been my view that in leading businesses, IT will move from supporting the business to becoming the business – which means there is no digital transformation without an underlying IT Transformation. This begs the question: where do IT shops around the world stand in making progress on this front?
The first Dell EMC World concluded last week. The level of enthusiasm and excitement in the hallways was truly overwhelming. After only six weeks operating as one combined company, we made an incredibly fast and strong start by announcing a wave of new products and solutions that combine industry-leading technologies from the Dell Technologies family.
Look around and see how dramatically digital technologies are revolutionizing entire industries, enabling new business models while disrupting familiar ways of doing business. Perhaps no industry illustrates this more starkly than media and entertainment and the proliferation of online journalism and crowd sourced content. The insurance industry could be next, where the deployment of sensors and advanced analytics are changing how risk gets measured and priced, how buyers compare policy offers and how policyholders file claims from mobile devices, submitting video for documentation. Looking further into the future, what will be the impact of driverless vehicles on rides for hire and trucking, not to mention today’s Uber drivers and teamsters who earn a living hauling people and freight from point A to B?
