The power of data in healthcare is nothing new. In 1846, a Hungarian doctor named Ignaz Semmelweis collected data to uncover why so many women in maternity wards were dying from childbed fever. After several outlandish theories, he discovered that medical students were transferring cadaverous particles from autopsies and thus one of the first infection-control hand-washing protocols was born. As a result, the rate of childbed fever fell dramatically. By using data to reach his conclusion, Dr. Semmelweis was a data scientist before his time.

Innovation on a Global Scale

I travel frequently to EMC’s global R&D locations to monitor innovation activities. One of the most common questions I receive is: Do you notice cultural differences in a particular region’s approach to innovation?

It is difficult to get an accurate feel for any culture unless you live there for an extended period of time. A more appropriate way of asking the question would be: What are your observations about innovation at EMC’s global locations?

I’ve thought about my observations in these areas and tried to come up with a word or two that describes what I’ve witnessed firsthand.

Different Minds Think Greatly

My co-workers recently forwarded me an interesting article about cognitive diversity.

The Techonomy article, written by John Hagel and John Seely Brown, asserts that “like-mindedness” can hurt corporations.

In other words, we should re-think the phrase “Great Minds Think Alike” and perhaps turn to something along the lines of “Different Minds Think Greatly.”

MWC: Bridging the Gap between the Enterprise and Service Providers

Last month, I took a trip to Barcelona to attend Mobile World Congress. This event is quite possibly the largest in the telecom and service provider industry. My rationale for going was to test a theory about (a) EMC’s focus on Cloud, Big Data, Trusted IT, and (b) our increasing emphasis on the Software-Defined Data Center: are these themes as interesting to Service Providers as they are to the Enterprise?
