I’m excited to be attending this year’s Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Annual Conference where the intersection of healthcare and IT will be more prevalent than ever before. Big Data, of course, will play a prominent role this year.
Massive amounts of raw information or “Big Data” is emanating from interconnected devices—the “Internet of Things.” According to this year’s EMC-sponsored IDC Digital Universe study, a major factor behind the expansion of the Digital Universe is the growth of machine-generated data — from 11% in 2005 to more than 40% projected in 2020, when IDC predicts 200 billion devices (e.g. sensors, surveillance cameras, appliances, vehicles, smart devices, toys, etc…) will be connected in the Digital Universe.
