Thoughts From Mobile World Congress: The Next Big Opportunity for Telco and Service Providers

As I look back on my experience at Mobile World Congress (MWC) held last month in Barcelona, I’m struck by how rapidly the Telco and Service Provider industry is changing. As I mentioned in my previous post Telcos and service providers are all engaged in large, complex, multi-year infrastructure and service delivery transformations. The technology transformation is the replacement of dedicated network appliances such as routers and cellular network switches with software running on commercial off-the-shelf hardware. The industry term for this is Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). The aim of NFV is to reduce the time to service, and cost for Communication Service Providers (CSPs) to deliver network services.

Mobile World Congress: Partnering With Service Providers And Telcos In Transition

Mobile World Congress is starting this week. It’s one of my favorite industry conferences and the premiere industry event for the telecommunications and service provider market. Coming out of Mobile World Congress 2015 I predicted this industry would move from (more…)

Telecom is in Motion Now

Based on Mobile World Congress (MWC) last month, we are now entering another time when the telecom technology landscape is evolving rapidly. There will be a huge shift to virtualized, agile, software oriented and common building block-based telecom clouds. This shift is at least as big, if not bigger, than any of the prior changes and my bet is that it will also spawn huge indirect IT ecosystem changes over time.

I have been involved in telecom for a few decades and have seen the industry change significantly. It’s hard to predict exactly what the end state will be, but it is both exciting and terrifying in that with these huge changes, lots of status quo perspectives will be challenged and new models will start to emerge. Personally I love this kind of change. In an industry that invests hundreds of billions in capital expenditures alone, change at this scale can be transformational for many more than just the operators themselves. (more…)

Reengineering the Service Provider Ecosystem Thoughts in Advance of Mobile World Congress 2015

Thoughts in Advance of Mobile World Congress 2015

Last week, I jumped into a conference room at EMC headquarters and recorded a few thoughts on the challenges facing the telco industry and what I’m hoping to learn about service providers while at Mobile World Congress next week in Barcelona, Spain.

Mobile World Congress is the biggest and most prestigious telco and service provider event of the year.  It reflects how big the ecosystem is.  It’s quite exciting because almost every player in the world, both executives and technical team members, converge in one place to understand how the industry is evolving going forward.
