This month, I spoke at The Churchill Club, which convenes gatherings of technology leaders and entrepreneurs from around Silicon Valley to talk about the future of our industry. Over the last 10 years, the size of EMC’s workforce in the Bay Area has mushroomed to more than 7,000 employees. And for the last two years in a row, people surveyed by the San Francisco Business Times/San Jose Business Journal have named EMC one of the top two Best Places to Work in the region. So, the fact that so many people joined us at The Churchill Club to hear our view of the future was another sign of EMC’s growing presence on the West Coast and in the IT industry.

My co-workers recently forwarded me an interesting article about cognitive diversity.

The Techonomy article, written by John Hagel and John Seely Brown, asserts that “like-mindedness” can hurt corporations.

In other words, we should re-think the phrase “Great Minds Think Alike” and perhaps turn to something along the lines of “Different Minds Think Greatly.”

EMC_PatGelsinger_FudanUniversityI just came back from China, where I had the chance to address students and faculty at Fudan University, in Shanghai, one of China’s leading research universities.

For the last three years, EMC has collaborated on research projects with a team at Fudan, as we do with a number of top universities in the U.S. and around the world. And I always love coming onto university campuses to see bright, creative, high energy students, so this was a real pleasure for me.

Like students in the U.S., the students there were interested in two things primarily: the future of IT from EMC’s perspective and what the future holds for their careers in IT.
